I don't think "leverage" and "use" are necessarily synonyms. Leveraging something means it is increasing returns in the process (just like financial leverage does). It has a stronger connotation than simply "using" something.

A company is it’s people. This blog puts a human face to our company. This is not a PR exercise, but actual people, warts and all.

I don't believe you're still using 'it's' instead of 'its'. shame on you!!

You are right – leverage has become a dumb substitute for 'use'.

I wrote a bit about the background of the word leverage here: http://smyword.com//are-you-stupid-enough-to-use-leverage-as-a-verb/

Very nice post ,love it.
It is amazing how sloppy we get with vocabulary

In the example you gave above:
"I think we the customers need to leverage the vendors to make better security software."

The sentence as written implies that the "vendors" themselves are "leveraged" to make better security software. It would be more accurate and correct to say that they "leverage the relationship" with their vendors. For it is the "relationship" itself that enhances their software not the people
